VoIP Technology
The future of Voice is here today. IP technology
is changing our world. Packet switching is an extremely efficient
and maximizes the potential of the network.
 |
VoIP technology
employs packet-switching technology . There are many benefits
to VoIP as compared to circuit switching. For instance,
here is how old fashioned circuit switching works:
|
 |
 |
Using PSTN, a 10-minute phone
call consumed 10 full minutes of transmission time at
a cost of 128 Kbps.
|
 |
 |
Using packet switching, a VoIP
call using G.729A would have only consumed 24Kbps in each
direction simultaneously and when using CRTP, a G.729A
call only requires 14Kbps.
|
 |
The bottom line:
packet switching allows several telephone calls to occupy
the amount of space occupied by only one in a circuit-switched
network. It is far more efficient and less expensive. |
There are two major protocols being used for
VoIP: H.323 and SIP. H.323 is the standard created by the International
Telecommunications Union (ITU) and is a comprehensive and very
complex protocol. It provides specifications for real-time,
interactive videoconferencing, data sharing and audio applications
such as IP telephony. |
